After the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” Peter Parker must now travel back home to New York and adjust to real life as a teenaged super-hero using Tony Stark as a mentor in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

Tom Holland now takes over the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man after the disastrous films that Andrew Garfield starred in. The casting choice was a good one as Holland has just enough boyhood charm and childishness to pull off being a young man who isn’t ready to become a member of The Avengers quite yet.

Robert Downey Jr. is as good as ever as a mentor for Parker, watching over him constantly and making sure that he doesn’t get into too much trouble. Downey Jr. always has a sarcastic wit and humor about him that everyone has come to know and love about Tony Stark’s character.

Michael Keaton turns in a terrific performance in a villainous role. I don’t recall a film in the last five years that Keaton has been in that he has drug down, he consistently makes his co-stars better and is clearly having fun in this role even if he takes it a bit over the top at times. That is what we expect in these movies so I saw no problem with that aspect.

The most impressive thing about the film was the humor and how lightly it took itself. There weren’t too many drama moments and even when there were, they were quickly followed by a comedic line from Downey Jr. or Holland. The film was written by a slew of writers, but the final draft was written by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley who are best known for “Horrible Bosses” and “Vacation.” Two comedies that this film was very much in the vein of.

Clearly, director Jon Watts or the studio wanted to take the franchise in a different direction than the predecessors which were much more serious. The Captain America cameos are worth the price of admission alone, I don’t doubt that there is an hour of blooper footage of Chris Evans doing different versions of his role.

I am not a huge “Avengers” fan or even super-hero movie fan in general so I clearly left this film very impressed. If you are more serious about your super-hero action and drama, then you may feel differently. However, for what it was and for what it was trying to be, it was just what I wanted. I will knock off one star because there were times I felt a bit lost and alienated because I hadn’t seen the previous movies, however this has been my favorite movie of the summer if not the year.
