The weekend of July 7th should show all studios that people are willing to go to a film no matter how long it has been in theaters. That should be evident by taking a look at this weekend’s top 5 grossing films which are very diverse, however “Spider-Man: Homecoming” took home the top prize with a big blockbuster ready for a wide release next week.

The Master, which recently released it’s first full trailer online (that trailer is embedded in this post) has been scheduled for an October release in the U.S. but only in “limited release.” The thought being that writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson would pick a film festival to premiere his film at then set an official U.S. wide release date.

Interesting news on the Horrible Bosses sequel. According to The Los Angeles Times , an offer has been made to the original film’s director, Seth Gordon to come aboard for the sequel. In January, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the original’s writers were signed for a sequel.
The interesting news is that none of the three stars from Horrible Bosses have been approached. Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis haven’t gotten offers yet. Not that any of those three are highly sought after stars in Hollywood, but it’s seems like you’re putting the ole cart before the horse.
The first trailer for Silver Linings Playbook has been released. It’s a film that I’m looking forward to, mainly because of the names involved. I mean look at that cast: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro, Julia Stiles, Chris Tucker (where has he been?) Not to mention that it’s directed by David O. Russell, who last brought us the Academy Award nominated film The Fighter. Here is the synopsis and the trailer.

I’m only about halfway through The Hunger Games second book ‘Catching Fire‘ so I’m not sure how big of a role this is, but according to The Hollywood Reporter the role of Plutarch Heavensbee has been offered and accepted by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Check out the link to get the details, hopefully it’s a large role because Hoffman is one of my favorite working actors right now. Look at his movie list and ask yourself, have any of those movies been worse because he was in them? The answer is absolutely not, in many cases he was the highlight. For instance, he was the standout for me in Pirate Radio, which was otherwise just an excuse to showoff some good music.
‘Catching Fire’ will begin production this fall and is due out in theaters November 22, 2013.
A very interesting development is happening in the marketing of The Master. The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as Lancaster Dodd who according to some people that have seen the film and are working on the film, is supposed to resemble L. Ron Hubbard, the beginner of Scientology. Apparently, Tom Cruise, who from everything I’ve ever known has a great relationship with director Paul Thomas Anderson, who he worked with on Magnolia, got hold of a copy of The Master and was not happy. The reasons can be found here but be warned There Will Be Spoilers.
Also, with the Tom Cruise divorce happening and it being in the news, the obvious reason everyone points to is Scientology. It will be interesting if the people in charge of marketing The Master start hinting at that Scientology/cult theme more and more as the release gets closer. The earlier teaser trailers, which can be found below have looked great and have me very excited, but they don’t let people know that the film is about an L. Ron Hubbard type of guy.
Release date for The Master is October 12, 2012.
